Cooperative Governance holds gender equality discussion, 31 Aug

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Government will hold a one day session with representatives from all 45 Municipalities, wherein the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) Report will be discussed.

The CGE is an independent statutory body, with a mandate to promote and protect gender equality in government, civil society and the private sector. To this end, the CGE Act No. 39 of 1996 (‘the CGE Act”) gives the CGE the power to monitor and evaluate policies and practices of organs of state at any level.

In the light of its mandate, the CGE embarked on a series of nationwide employment equity hearings, inviting both the public and the private sector to present their equity and transformation policies.

CoGTA, as a department responsible for a responsive, accountable, effective and efficient local government system, has been requested to provide a written progress report on all recommendations as per the published CGE Report.

The planned session will serve as a mechanism to put into practice the mandate of CoGTA as a single window of coordination for greater cohesion to the work of government and removal of fragmentation within the cooperative arrangements impacting on local government.

The emphasis of the discussions will be on an integrated model that will assist both the Department and the Municipalities to address and implement recommendations.

Mrs Jessie Duarte who is the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African National Congress and a person who drives the transformation agenda in the country, is expected to be part of the programme
