Consultative Dialogue on Women and Climate Change

A consultative dialogue on women and climate change preparing for the climate change negotiations (COP17/COMP7) is to be held on Monday, 8 August 2011 at the Ranch Resort, Protea Hotel, Polokwane.

The consultative dialogue is organised under the theme “the impact of climate change on women preparing for COP17 and beyond”. The dialogue is hosted by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation; Environmental Affairs; Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities.

The dialogue forms part of national women's month celebration and is a build up to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate’s 17th Conference of Parties (COP17/COMP7) taking place in Durban between  28 November 2011 and 9 December 2011.

The dialogue will be addressed on Monday, 8 August by the Incoming COP17/CMP7 President: Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Maite Nkoana – Mashabane as well as the Leader of the South African delegation to the conference: Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa. Other Ministerial addresses will be delivered by the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, Minister of Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities, Lulu Xingwana and Minister of Energy, Dipuo Peters.

South Africa has a key role to play in addressing women and climate change, through enhancing the voices of African women in climate change negotiations, mainstreaming gender perspectives in national policies, plans and other measures related to sustainable development and climate change.
