AU-EU innovation festival to showcase youth and women-led initiatives
As South Africa celebrates young people during June and commemorates the 16 June Soweto and other related uprisings, showcasing economic opportunities for the youth is important.
The Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) supports a number of science, technology and innovation programmes for young people and is proud to support the first ever AU-EU Innovation Festival, taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
Hosted by the European Union, African Union and South Africa, through the DSI, the initiative seeks to showcase and ensure that innovation translates into tangible products, services, businesses and jobs between Africa and Europe.
The event brings together innovators' and entrepreneurs' insights and perspectives on the AU-EU Innovation Agenda and will feature pitching sessions and exhibitions of innovations from both Africa and Europe. The initiative is predominantly focused on the innovations of youth and women.
The projects on display will include, among others, an umbilical cord and placenta simulator and Cropfix, a text-based chat bot that combines satellite data analytics and artificial intelligence to identify damaged plants.

The festival will be preceded by the inauguration of the ENRICH in Africa Centre, which takes place this afternoon,14 June, at the Methys innovation hub in Century City, Cape Town.
ENRICH in Africa is a project designed to bring together core stakeholders from Europe and Africa to support and strengthen their shared innovation ecosystem. The centre supports incubators and accelerators across the two continents to engage with each other and build lasting collaborations.
