Rural Development and Land Reform hosts Building the Legacy: 20 Years of Freedom Exhibition in Bloemfontein, 21 to 30 Mar

Walk through the history of South Africa

The biggest exhibition of its kind in South Africa country is coming to Bloemfontein. The national Department of Rural Development and Land Reform together with the Free State province is hosting the Building the Legacy: 20 Years of Freedom Exhibition at Free State Stadium, Kingsway Bloemfontein from 21 March to 30 March 2014.

The people of the Free State province are invited to take a walk through the history of our country by visiting this unique exhibition which also kicks off 20 years of freedom celebrations. The exhibition takes you through colonial history, land dispossession, repression, resistance, and transition to democracy, and the legacy of the last 20 Years of Freedom. It is aimed at creating awareness especially among the youth, about the journey travelled thus far and the progress made by the government of the day towards reversing the negative legacy of the 1913 Natives’ Land Act and related racially motivated laws.

The exhibition features a vibrant cast including actors from the Free State Province; it covers three broad themes on colonial and apartheid land dispossession; resistance to colonialism and apartheid; and the restitution of land rights to victims of forced removals under the democratic government.

According to the Chief Land Claims Commissioner Ms Nomfundo Gobodo, the exhibition is interactive as it gives the visitor an opportunity to experience life before colonisation, during apartheid and life post 1994 where we now begin to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s Legacy. It creates awareness, especially among the youth about the journey travelled thus far and the progress made by the government toward reversing the negative legacy of the 1913 Natives’ Land Act and other racially related laws. She added that the exhibition will give people an opportunity to “walk through the history of South Africa and actually feel like you were there. It’s about feeling the emotion and being part of what happened”.

Gates at the stadium open at 9am - 5pm and the entrance to the exhibition is free and open to all the members of the public.
