Minister Maropene Ramokgopa participates in Township Economy in BRICS Dialogue, 15 Aug

Minister Maropene Ramokgopa to participate in the Township Economy in BRICS Dialogue.

The Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME), Ms Maropene Ramokgopa will on the 15th of August 2023 participate in the Township Economy in BRICS Dialogue in Orlando West, Soweto. The inaugural dialogue is hosted by the Township Economic Commission of South Africa (TECSA) with the support of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) BRICS Directorate.

The dialogue will be convened exactly a week before the commencement of the much anticipated 15th BRICS Summit in Sandton, Johannesburg.

In recent decades South Africa’s townships have evolved into vibrant centres of entrepreneurship, cultural preservation, resilience, and innovation. This has led to the emergence of the township economy which demonstrates the power of harnessing local potential to drive national growth, inclusivity, and sustainable development. However, the stark historical inequalities are persistent.

Therefore, the BRICS dialogue aims to give impetus to the formation and launch of the Township and Informal Economy in BRICS forum to encourage the integration of townships in the broader BRICS social and economic discussions. In addition, the dialogue also provides a platform for participants to discuss the lived realities of social and economic challenges in our townships that impede the development of micro- economies, with the intention to help accelerate the growth and development of the Township Economy.

The Township Economy in BRICS Dialogue is the first of its kind.

With the Presidency theme for 2023 echoed in government corridors “Leaving No One Behind” the dialogue seeks to attract a diverse range of participants including but not limited to township entrepreneurs across different economic sectors and townships, intermediaries organizations, representatives from BRICS countries, different government departments, and the residents of Soweto.
