Labour hosts Jobs Fair Summit, 31 Oct

Department of Labour hosts Jobs Fair and Summit – where business and people meet

With unemployment stubbornly at high levels, the Department of Labour is to host a Jobs Fair and Summit, where work-seekers will get an opportunity to meet with prospective employers.

The Jobs Fair and Summit will provide Labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant with a platform to make announcements on departmental interventions in the labour market. It will provide an opportunity for the public to engage with the Minister and departmental officials.

Labour Deputy Minister, iNkosi Phathekile Holomisa and Department of Labour Director-General, Thobile Lamati are also expected to attend. There will also be officials from the branches of the department such as the Administration; Public Employment Services (PES); Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES); Labour Policy and Industrial Relations. There will also be representatives from the department’s entities - Unemployment Insurance Fund and the Compensation Fund.

The Jobs Fair and Summit concept was initiated way back in 2011/12 by the Department to provide an opportunity for work-seekers to meet with prospective employers, other organisations or Government Departments that can assist with their placement in different forms of employment or learning opportunities.

The Job Fairs are targeted at the unemployed youth who dropped out of school, unemployed youth with school exit certificates, unemployed graduates, workers who are under employed and retrenched workers.

The Department of Labour has a branch called Public Employment Services that provide the employment services free of charge to members of the public using its electronic matchmaking platform called Employment Services of South Africa (ESSA).

Some of the services provided by PES include:

  • Matching work seekers with available work opportunities;
  • Registering job vacancies and other work opportunities;
  • Registering work seekers;
  • Facilitating the placing of work seekers with employers or in other work opportunities;
