Government convenes Human Settlements NGO/CSO Summit for Collaborative and Accelerated Service Delivery

Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi and Deputy Minister Pam Tshwete will this week host a Non-Governmental and Civil Society Organisations Summit, under the theme: “Strengthening Partnership to Deliver Better, Safer and Secure Sustainable Human Settlements”.

The two-day Summit, scheduled for Thursday to Friday (30 November to 1 December 2023) in Gauteng, will be convened in the spirit of forging closer partnerships and collaborations between the government and various stakeholders in the sector to accelerate sustainable and integrated human settlements.

The NGOs and CSOs are important service-delivery agents in the implementation of sustainable and integrated human settlements programmes to the vulnerable in society. The Summit will break into the following thematised panel discussions: legal and human rights imperatives for human settlements, especially the right to shelter, water and sanitation; the role of women, youth and people with disabilities in human settlement sector as both economic participants and beneficiaries; a capable and ethical public service to respond to human settlements challenges; 30-year review, lessons learned as well as advocacy and partnership to enhance the imperatives of building better, safer and secure cities and communities.

The Summit will also be utilised as a platform to solicit inputs aimed at strengthening the White Paper on Human Settlements. The White Paper will be made available for public comment soon after approval by Cabinet.
 
Delegates to the Summit will comprise of key stakeholders from non-governmental and community-based organisations,, academia, oversight bodies including the Public Protector, Human Rights Commission and the Public Service Commission, together with professionals in the built environment, government departments, and various institutions.
