Robust youth debate on whether to vote or not to vote in the 2019 elections
In a series of seminars planned across the province, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature will host a critical thinking seminar that aims to facilitate a robust youth debate on the subject: ‘to vote or not to vote’ in the upcoming (2019) national and provincial elections.
The seminars solicit youth views on how they perceive the future of South Africa and their contribution through participating in crucial democratic processes such as voting. Ultimately, the seminar envisages spurring young people into action and active citizenry through urging them to register to vote in the upcoming general elections in 2019.
Current statistics suggest that Gauteng youths between 18 and 29 make up the province’s largest population bracket – yet they are the least active in critical democratic processes such as elections. The seminar is therefore called out a need for a targeted awareness to this age group.
It further aims to probe youth thoughts on the value of voting in a climate where young people seemingly prefer ‘alternative’ methods to vent their frustrations to government, e.g. service delivery protests and damaging state property among others.
The seminar taking place in a form of a panel discussion comprised of students at the Ekurhuleni West TVET College and influential personalities i.e. Xoli Mngambi (Broadcast Journalist, Bujy Bikwa (Radio Personality), Donovan Goliath (Comedian), Bongekile Skosana (Kaya FM Producer) and Jessica Mthimkhulu (TV Presenter) to dwell into some issues that will review young people’s perspective on voting.
