Fraud Awareness seminar

The Northern Cape Provincial Government in partnership with the University of the Free Sate Business School and accounting companies namely JGL Advisory Services, PWC and Association of Certified Fraud Examiners South Africa (ACFE) will be hosting a one day Fraud Awareness seminar.

“The vast majority (77%) of all frauds in our study were committed by individuals working in one of six departments: accounting, operations, sales, executive/upper management, customer service and purchasing. As in our prior research, the industry’s most commonly victimised in our current study were the banking and financial services, government and public administration, and manufacturing sectors.” ACFE, Report to the Nations 2012.

This seminar forms part of the National Fraud Awareness Week that will run from the 12th November to the 17th November 2012 and is aimed at raising awareness about the increase in fraud that is depriving communities at large from benefitting due to the fact that resources that are aimed at service delivery are redirected.

The Northern Cape seminar will take place under the theme “Fraud and risk management seminar”. The seminar will have as discussion points the fact that an anti-fraud culture should be instilled and creating awareness about unethical behavior and what actions are to be taken in the event of this breach in ethics. This seminar is definitely a step in the right direction towards the promotion of the highest standards of governance.

The seminar will be led by the Provincial MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Mr. John Block and he will be joined by his colleagues in the Provincial Executive Committee and Members of the Provincial Legislature. In attendance will also be senior stakeholders from the partnering companies as well as Mayors, Municipal Managers, Heads of Provincial Departments, Chief Financial Officers and sector leaders.
