The fourth South African Carbon Capture & Storage (Ccs) Conference
The South African Centre for Carbon Capture & Storage (SACCCS) in partnership with the Department of Energy will host the 4th Carbon Capture and Storage Conference on the 20 to 21October 2015 at Capital 20 West Hotel, Johannesburg.
The theme of the Conference is “Capacitating South Africa for CCS”, which speaks to the need to build local capacity in CCS in order for the country to successfully implement the Pilot CO2 Storage Project (PCSP).
The Conference also refers to the process of stakeholder engagement where SACCCS is engaging with key stakeholders by sharing information on CCS including benefits and potential risks associated with CCS application. Day 2 has been developed with a focus on the academia and international CCS experts coming together to identify technical gaps and coming up with solutions on how to address them.

Background information
SACCCS, a division of the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) is mandated to undertake technical development of Carbon Capture and Storage in South Africa. CCS is one of the seven Flagship Programmes in the National Climate Change Response Strategy White Paper released late 2011.
South Africa has a coal-based energy-economy. Notwithstanding the country's renewable energy programme and energy efficiency measures, coal is forecast to remain South Africa's main source of primary energy for a few decades to come. If South Africa is to attain carbon dioxide emission reductions as committed to at COP17, then CCS is an essential component of mitigation actions.
The 2010 Atlas on geological storage of CO2 in South Africa identified KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape as the regions with the most potential for safe and secure CO2 storage. SACCCS is now planning further exploration of this potential.
Exploration will involve establishing the geological suitability of the regions and will be supported by environmental assessments and engagement with all relevant stakeholders. Only if this exploration is successful and an appropriate site is identified, SACCCS will develop a PCSP to further evaluate and build experience around the technology in a South African context.
The PCSP is the next critical phase of CCS development in South Africa. This Project is an essential step for a prospective full-scale integrated CCS demonstration that must precede a commercial roll-out. The PCSP is a proof of concept for carbon capture and storage in South Africa.
