Department of Employment and Labour to discuss the importance of labour inspector’s role to protect vulnerable workers in different sectors
The suite of labour legislation administered by the Department of Employment and Labour coupled with challenges and their impact on the inspectorate will be put under the spotlight when the Department hosts two Employment Standards conferences starting next week.
The Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES) branch of the Department of Employment and Labour plans to host Employment Standards conferences. The conferences will be attended by Employment Standards Labour Inspectors covering all provinces.
The purpose of the conferences is to discuss the importance of the Labour Inspector’s role on inspections with the aim of protecting the vulnerable workers in different sectors.
Through the Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES) branch the Department regularly conducts advocacy campaigns to ensure compliance with labour legislation that it administers such as: Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA); Unemployment Insurance Act (UIA); Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases (COID) Act; National Minimum Wage Act (NMWA); Employment Equity Act (EEA); Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and Employment Services Act (ESA).
The conferences, that form part of fulfilling the advocacy mandate of the Department - will be held in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, respectively. The Department hosts the engagements with the objective to conduct awareness on compliance with labour legislation and to educate employers and employees on the legislations and their amendments.
The conferences are also aimed at protecting the vulnerable workers. They will also focus on issues related to compliance with labour legislation and other issues prevailing in the labour market.
