Deputy Minister Buti Manamela to lead the open learning seminar

Deputy Minister for Higher Education and Training, Mr Buti Manamela, will lead an open learning seminar on Monday 22 October 2018 at the University of South Africa in Pretoria.

National Development Plan (NDP), the 2014-2019 Medium Term Strategic Framework and the 2014 White Paper for Post-School Education and Training, identifies expanded access to education and training opportunities and diversified provision based on open learning principles as a strategy to improve learning across the sector.

There is a need to expand access to more cost-effective and flexible education and training making use of innovative information and communication technologies (ICT) for teaching and learning, in a situation of far from equal penetration and affordability of ICT across South Africa.

As part of ongoing policy development and consultations, as well as the development of the National Open Learning System for the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) Sector, the seminar will bring together stakeholders to assess the current state of learning in PSET institutions.

The seminar will also explore possible opportunities presented by technology to expand access to affordable quality post-school education and training. The invited stakeholders include management and practitioners in Universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges, academics, other practitioners, quality councils and private providers.
