The Department of Environmental Affairs will be hosting a National Integrated Coastal Management Programme (NCMP) workshop under the theme: “Development of a National Coastal Management Programme in South Africa”.
The workshop aims, amongst others, to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss and provide inputs in the development of an NCMP by identifying priority strategies and implementation plans in order to provide an integrated, uniform approach to coastal management.
It also seeks to develop a draft NCMP based on Integrated Coastal Management Act (ICM) requirements such as the national vision for coastal management and its objectives, the priorities and strategies to achieve these objectives as well as norms and standards for future management.
NCMP’s objective is to provide norms, guidelines and standards with regards to coastal zones management practices and will apply to national, provincial and municipal coastal zones.
The following norms and standards will be discussed: Coastal public property, coastal access, set backlines, water quality guidelines, national estuarine management protocol, climate change mitigation/adaptation and risk and vulnerability. Coastal public property includes coastal waters, the land submerged by the coastal waters; natural island within coastal waters and so forth.
The benefits of the workshops include providing a platform for comments and inputs to the development of the NCMP, improving alignment of the NCMP with the provincial and municipality CMPs.
Members of the public, media, government departments and interested and affected parties are all invited to attend national and provincial workshops.
