Biennial South African Sport and Recreation Conference (SASRECON)

The Department of Sport and Recreation will once again hold its biennial South African Sport and Recreation Conference (SASReCon), at the North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, G20 Building from the 6th to the 8th of October 2014. This year, SASReCon will bring different role players together to debate, discuss and promote Physical Education, Physical Activity and Health; Youth and School Sport; and Business in Sport and Recreation aspects through evidence based, scientific research and best practices.  

The official opening will feature several keynote addresses, from The Sport Ministry, International speakers including Emeritus Professor Han Kemper of the Vrije University in Amsterdam, Professor Michael Pedersen, the Founder of M. INC, Professor Michael Boit the Olympian from Kenyatta University in Kenya. On the second day of the conference the keynote addresses will be delivered by our own Professors Vicki Lambert, Yoga Coopoo, Shane Norris and Doctor Pravesh Bhoodram.

The theme for this year is "20 years of Democracy: Sport as a catalyst for change", which is keeping in line with the country’s celebration of 20 years of freedom and democracy since 1994.

The conference will focus on how academics, practitioners and business can help the government in implementing and achieving its National Sport and Recreation Plan, which was adopted by the sport and recreation sector at the National Sport and Recreation Indaba in November 2011.

The anticipated outcome of SASReCon 2014 is to synthesise stakeholders’ recommendations concerning the effectiveness, programmes, policies and implementation within their jurisdictions which can be harnessed by the Department of Sport and Recreation for better sport and recreation service delivery in the country.
