Benguela Current Commission in Port Elizabeth

The Benguela Current Commission (BCC) is to hold its Projects Steering Committee and Management Board meetings in Port Elizabeth, from today, 21 November to Friday, 24 November 2012.

The BCC is a multi-sectoral inter-governmental initiative of the governments of South Africa, Angola and Namibia. The Benguela Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME) extends from Angola’s Cabinda province to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. The BCLME is one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world. The Department of Environmental Affairs is the lead department for South Africa on the Commission.

It was set up in 1997 to promote the sustainable management and protection of the BCLME. This means that instead of only managing living and non-living marine resources at national level, the three countries are encouraged to work together to tackle problem that affect the ecosystem as a whole. It is focused on the management of shared fish stocks, the assessment and monitoring of the physical environment, the management of biodiversity and ecosystem health and the mitigation of pollution.
