Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile to launch the countdown to 20 years of Freedom campaign

On 3 June 2013 on the occasion of the build-up campaign to the milestone 20th Anniversary  celebration, Minister of Arts and Culture, Paul Mashatile, shared his insight to the campaign as “...an opportunity for us as South Africans, to reflect on how our freedom and democracy was achieved. It is an opportunity to look back at the road we have travelled since 1994 to deepen the gains of our freedom and democracy.”

On Friday 25 October 2013 Minister Mashatile will once again be calling on all South Africans to prepare for this event.  Over the next six months, South Africans will be given a platform through which they can share their experiences, views, reflections and memories of what the last twenty years means to them.

“I call on all South Africans, lets come together and take apart in activities that promote a common South African consciousness. This is not a government campaign. Let us make this the coming together of South Africans from different walks of life, united in our effort to deepend national pride and celebrate all that is good about our country," added Mashatile.

This exciting phase in the build up to next year’s celebrations will include countdown clocks at range of public spaces across the country.  Various digital media platforms will also be used to capture some of the crucial milestones our country has experienced.  South Africans will also be encouraged to add to the content that will be on offer.

The countdown campaign is just one activity aimed at mobilising South Africans behind the 20 years of freedom and democracy celebrations. Last month saw the launch of Freedom Friday, an initiative by Lead SA in partnership with the Department of Art and Culture, Government Communications and Information System (GCIS), Proudly SA and Brand South Africa.

“Freedom Friday, is a call on the nation to celebrate our ‘South Africanness’ by wearing whatever makes them proud to be South African. It could be a sports jersey, traditional dress or beaded suit,” said Lead SA’s Yusuf Abramjee.
