African, European research funders meet to discuss future cooperation programme

African and European research funders are meeting in Pretoria from 16 to 18 September to review a programme of cooperation that the two continents signed in 2012 on projects of mutual interest.

ERAfrica, a cooperation programme, was established as a three-year funding project between Africa and Europe through calls for proposals in areas such as renewable energy, the interface between societal challenges and ideas-driven research in any field.

The Department of Science and Technology has committed €1 million to fund South African researchers participating in ERAfrica; South African researchers are participating in 13 of the successful proposals.

Funding partners include Austria, Belgium, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Kenya, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Switzerland and Turkey. ERAfrica was established not only to eradicate poverty and advance sustainable development in Africa, but also to address the many shared societal challenges faced by both continents.

The event is scheduled as follows:
Date: 16 to 18 September 2014
Time: 09h00 – 16h00
Venue: Innovation Hub, Lynnwood, Pretoria
