Conference to enhance road traffic management

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) will be hosting the first International Road Traffic Safety Management conference in partnership with the Institute of Traffic and Municipality Police Officers of Southern Africa (ITMPOSA) and the Western Cape province. The conference details are as follows:

Date: 24 to 28 August 2009
Venue: Cape Town International Convention Centre

The objective of this conference is to address critical road traffic safety issues and to find solutions, to share expertise, to identify best practice models and experiences in order to improve the image as well as professionalism of the road traffic fraternity. This platform will be used to communicate and clarify the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) related matters.

Other major areas of Road Traffic Management to be discussed during the conference include:
* traffic law enforcement
* road safety education and communication
* accident investigation and reconstruction
* training of traffic personnel
* traffic quality management and evaluation.

The conference intensifies a voice that says "together we can do more" since it will be attended by road safety practitioners, traffic officers, accident investigators and members of the public. The panel that will be presenting thought provoking papers will include individuals from international, national and local road safety bodies, Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states, and civil society presenters.

This conference also forms part of the initiatives that Road Traffic Authorities will undertake in order to realise a Millennium Development Goal of halving road fatalities by the year 2014 as set by the African Union.
