Community Safety launches safety ambassador

The MEC for Community Safety Ms Faith Mazibuko with a staff complement of over 1 000 employees will tomorrow pledge to be safety ambassador during the launch of the campaign to be held at Turfontein Race Course. The community safety ambassadors who have been working tiresly to mobilise communities and advanced issues of women and children will also form part of the proceedings.

Some of these ambassadors include, Vuyo Mbuli, Arthur Mafokate, Thobi Mkwanazi, Relebogile Mobotja, Ntokozo Mhlalela, Derick Wieman, Sam Mlangeni, Zweli the poet Mtsholongo, Dr Love, Nambitha Mpulwana, Lorraine Sepakwe of SA Rugby, Jet Novuka of Zone 14, Matthew Manamela a Film Director to name a few. These community safety ambassadors have been recruited since 2006, when the department launched the Gauteng Safety Strategy and the Take Charge campaign. One key pillar of the strategy is community mobilisation, and the department is encouraged by the work done since.

The musicians have since produced a Take Charge song, Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) donated a library for Ikhaya Lethemba a one stop centre for victims of gender based violence, the massive drive by Cosatu to restore dignity to people of Bokkies farm in Ukurhuleni, Sports Against Crime championed by Sam Mlangeni in the Vaal as well as child safety workshops conducted by Nambitha Mpulwana. Dr Love has been instrumental in mobilising communities through his programme of Soweto TV.

It was exactly two years ago when the department launched the departmental values to complement the Batho-Pele principles and have since living the values to ensure professional conduct is maintained.
