The Minister of Communications, General (Ret) Siphiwe Nyanda, will meet with members of the Inanda, Ntuzuma and Kwa-Mashu (INK) communities near Durban in KwaZulu-Natal for a Public Participation meeting. The meeting is part of government's public participation week, previously called Imbizo week. It is being convened to engage and mobilise the INK communities for stronger and active partnership with government to accelerate the government Programme of Action.
In 2001, the Inanda, Ntuzuma and Kwa-Mashu areas were declared Urban Renewal Nodes, and for the past seven years, the Department of Communications has been engaging with INK community coordinators to ensure its contribution and participation in the development of these nodes. The Department of Communications has assisted the communities by establishing a Community Digital Hub, which was launched in 2006, and more recently, two community radio stations.
To this end, the Department of Communications assisted the communities with broadcast infrastructure, facilitation of the broadcasting signal, as well as capacity building to ensure that these communities have access to community radio. As a result the two community radio stations, Inanda FM and Vibe FM (Kwa-Mashu), are now operational.
As part of the Public Participation programme, Minister Nyanda will tour these facilities and meet with the management of the two stations.
The Minister will use the opportunity to officially launch the two stations.
