Committees to visit cultural sites and courts

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Arts and Culture will be visiting various cultural sites in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces this week. The aim of the visit is to assess the cultural sites’ accessibility, their contribution to the surrounding communities and to also look at the challenges they face.

Tomorrow the committee will visit Windybrow Playhouse in Johannesburg and Freedom Park in Pretoria and on Wednesday visit Noria Mabasa in Thohoyandou, Limpopo.

On Thursday, the Committee will wrap up its oversight programme by visiting the plane crash site of Samora Machel at Mbuzini in Mpumalanga. This particular visit is intended to assist in fostering good relations with the people of Mozambique on cultural issues and to check the state of the cultural site.

Meanwhile, the Standing Committee on Public Accounts will tomorrow and Wednesday visit the courts in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal to ascertain the problems experienced in these courts and what financial controls are in place to improve services. The Committee wants to also get first hand experience of the impact poor financial controls have in these courts. The Committee will divide itself into two groups, with each visiting two provinces.

The courts to be visited are:

  • KwaZulu-Natal (Umlazi Magistrate Court)
  • Eastern Cape (Mdantsane Magistrate Office)
  • Mpumalanga (Thulamahashe Magistrate Court)
  • Limpopo (Tubatse and Seshego Magistrate Courts)
