Parliament's Select Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will from 26 to 27 May continue with its fact finding visits to municipalities under administration.
Today the committee has been visiting Eastern Cape's Sundays River Valley local municipality. And tomorrow it will visit Mpumalanga's Thembisile Hani local municipality and Moses Kotane local municipality in the North West province. The visits follow numerous notices of section 139 (1)(b) interventions tabled before the National Council of Provinces.
In terms of section 139(1)(b), when a municipality cannot or does not fulfil an executive obligation in terms of the Constitution or legislation, the relevant provincial executive may intervene by taking any appropriate steps to ensure fulfilment of that obligation, including assuming responsibility for the relevant obligation in that municipality.
The committee will interact with stakeholders and monitor constitutional compliance with placing the municipalities under administration.

Meanwhile, the Portfolio Committee on Mining will on Wednesday, 26 May 2010, and Friday, 28 May 2010, hold public hearings on the establishment of a state-owned mining company. The hearings will be held in the Old Assembly chamber at 09h00.
