Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises will tomorrow, 24 June visit Denel headquarters in Johannesburg and the parastatal’s subsidiaries.
The committee has resolved to undertake an oversight visit to Denel to get first-hand information on the depth of the challenges faced by the entity and its employees. The visit follows numerous engagements that the committee has had with the Department of Public Enterprises and Denel on the various challenges faced by Denel including its turnaround strategy.
In the 2010/11 financial year Denel made a loss of R246 million from R533 million in the previous financial year. The entity attributed its loss to the Denel SAAB Aerostructures (DSA) division.
Amongst other challenges, the DSA division has been severely affected by the continued decline in defence budget, and the inability to penetrate the arms manufacturing global market.
Chairperson for the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises Mr Peter Maluleka said the oversight visit will afford the committee an opportunity to hear what solution the executives of Denel have to turn the situation around.
After the visit, the committee will table a report before the National Assembly.
