Committee to visit State-Owned Enterprises

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises will next week, from 16 to 20 November, visit State-Owned Enterprises and development projects to get a clear picture of their current state of affairs.

The Committee will visit OR Tambo International Airport, Eskom power stations in Lephalale (Medupi and Matimba), Port of Ngqura in Port Elizabeth, Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) at Phelindaba, Transnet Koedoespoort engineering site and the pipeline.

The oversight visit to OR Tambo International Airport will, among others, give the Committee an opportunity to know the challenges faced by SAA with regard to airport logistics as well as baggage pilfering. The trips to Port of Ngqura will asses projects in the area.

At Transnet, the Members of Parliament will look at the entity’s pipelines in view of its infrastructure expansion programme to meet the demands of a growing economy, while the visit to the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) is meant to get an update on the scientific aspects of the nuclear project, the construction phases and the capital needed for its construction.

The interaction with Eskom is expected to shed light on the nature of the power utility’s challenges with regard to the funding model, tariff hikes and the infrastructure expansion programme, especially the progress on the construction of Medupi and Matimba power stations.

During these visits, the Committee will engage with Board members of Eskom, South African Airways (SAA), PBMR and Transnet.

The oversight visits form part of Parliament’s efforts to strengthen its oversight function.
