Committee Hosts Public Meeting on Renewable Energy

The Portfolio Committee on Energy will tomorrow host a public meeting on issues regarding job creation in local manufacturing within the renewable energy sector.

The meeting will focus on various presentations from the local manufacturing industry, academics and relevant departments looking at renewable energy. Chairperson for the Portfolio Committee on Energy, Mr Sisa Njikelana says the meeting will create a platform for public discourse in the energy industry by facilitating structured discussions on various topics related to energy issues.

The meeting is a first of its kind and is part of a programme that the Committee will be holding in a series of engagements. Parliament will drive the initiative with various stakeholders. The discussion is aimed at producing quality analyses of key energy issues, keeping policy makers and legislators regularly informed about the developments in this sector particularly the renewable energy sector, engaging civil society and business communities in search for solutions to challenges in the industry and eventually setting a platform to empower the key audience in the energy sector.

Mr Njikelana says he is mindful of initiatives that have been implemented. “There is an untold need for this effort due to demands for this programme to address challenges in the sector,” he adds. The discussion will also examine, among other things, whether local manufacturing is appropriately factored in the current procurement process of renewable energy from Independent Power Producers by the Department of Energy.
