Committee holds public hearings on Walmart and Massmart merger

The Portfolio Committee on Economic Development will tomorrow, 19 to 21 July conduct public hearings on the Walmart and Massmart merger.

The main purpose of the hearings is to investigate the impact of the merger particularly on employment, industrial development, local manufacturing and economic development.

Submissions made to the committee will afford the opportunity for the public, civil society, and business to comment on the conditions imposed by the Competition Tribunal.

The public hearings follow approval by the Competition Tribunal between Wal-Mart stores of United States of America and South African retailer Massmart on 31 May 2011.

The conditions set by the Competition Tribunal indicated that the two companies must uphold existing labour agreements for three years and ensure that no jobs are cut for two years. In addition the Tribunal stated it accepted the conditions proposed by the merging companies to set up a R100 million supplier development fund.

Details of the public hearings:
Date: 19 to 21 July 2010
Venue: Old Assembly Chamber
Time: 10h30 to 17h00
