Committee continues its provincial petitions study

Committee on Private Members’ Legislative Proposals and Special Petitions will on Wednesday and Thursday visit the Eastern and Northern Cape legislatures to find out how they handle and process petitions from the public.

The visit is aimed at giving the Committee an overview of current petitions legislations as practised in provincial legislatures. The Committee is investigating the possibility of developing a National Petitions Act that will guide the country on how to petition Parliament and assist legislatures on the effective handling procedures of petitions.

Last week, the Committee visited legislatures in the North West, Free State and Mpumalanga.

Since the birth of democracy in 1994, Parliament has not had an Act that prescribes how petitions should be handled. Its petitions handling procedure is governed by the Rules of both the National Assembly (NA) and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP).

Details of the visit:

  • On 1 August 2012 at 09h30, the Committee will be at the Eastern Cape Legislature in Bhisho
  • On 2 August 212 at 09h00, the Committee will be at the Kimberly Legislature in Kimberly.
