Committee conducts public hearings on Mining Charter

The Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources will tomorrow (26 August 2011) continue its public hearings on the review of the Mining Charter.

The charter came into effect in 2002 and was amended last year.

The purpose of the Charter was to set the framework, targets and timetables for the implementation of the government's transformation policies through its power to regulate and grant prospecting and mining rights.

Its objectives were to promote equitable access to South Africa’s mineral wealth; increase opportunities for historically-disadvantaged South Africans to benefit from mining; expand the skills base; job creation; improve living standards, particularly in regard to the conversion of single sex hostels into family units; and promote beneficiation of mineral resources.

The Committee is conducting public hearings on the amended charter, which aims at transforming the mining industry by transferring 26% of the key sector into black hands by 2014.

Details of the hearings:
Date: 26 August 2011
Time: 09:00
Old Assembly Building Committee Room V454, 4th floor.
