Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) makes presentation before United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) will be presenting its first report on South Africa's implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women on 2 August 2010.

The presentation will be done at the pre-session working group meeting which is scheduled to take place from 2 to 6 August in New York.

The main objective of the CGE report is to provide additional information to that in the government report covering the period, 1998 to 2008. The report will enable the CEDAW Committee to have a better informed understanding of how South Africa is implementing its obligations in terms of the convention.

The report covers a variety of issues that are gender related, based on the CEDAW articles which are in line with the mandate of the CGE. The mandate is derived from section 11 of the CGE Act 39 of 1996, in terms of which, the CGE shall monitor the compliance with international conventions, international covenants and international charters, acceded to or ratified by the Republic of South Africa relating to the object of the Commission.
