On 28 June 2012, the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) will host a public hearing for investigation purposes on South African Women Football Association’s (SAWFA) complaint against South African Football Association (SAFA). The Commission has conducted an investigation into gender transformation in South Africa. It is evident from the findings of the investigations that there is no gender transformation in South African Football.
After considering all relevant facts and the complaint lodged to the Commission by an organisation called South African Women’s Football Association, the Commission decided to conduct an investigation in terms of Section 12, of the Commission on Gender Equality Act 39 of 1996. As a result, the Commission had invited SAFA to come and account/appear before the Commissioners to answer questions related to the above subject.
The Commission views lack of gender Transformation in South African Football as a discrimination against women. The Commission could not established justifiable ground for this discrimination and therefore found same to be discrimination based on gender and unconstitutional.
The hearing will serve as a platform to determine both the kind of challenges that beset SAFA and measures that may be put in place to address them in line with the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act 4 of 2000.
You are therefore kindly invited to attend the hearing as follows:
