Freedom Park hosts schools during Heritage Month, 11 Sept

Between September and October 2015, the Gautrain Management Agency in partnership with Freedom Park will host several schools from advantaged and disadvantaged backgrounds. Learners will ride on the world class Gautrain and experience the heritage tour at Freedom Park.

Freedom Park and Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) have signed a memorandum of understanding to work together on matters of common interest. Freedom Park and GMA are major attractions in the city of Tshwane and therefore complement each other since they are entities that enhance tourism in the country.

This memorandum of understanding has culminated into an initiative which aims to encourage schools to visit places along the Gautrain Route and to educate them about domestic tourism. Targeted schools for this initiative include schools from both the disadvantaged and the advantaged communities.

During the month of September and October Gautrain will embark in an initiative called ‘connecting the dots through transport. The aim of this initiative is to encourage schools to visit places along the Gautrain route using the train and to educate them about domestic Tourism.

There will be a minimum of 40 high school tourism learners per school and at least 8 facilitators per school.  The school from Tembisa will be bringing 200 grade 5 learners and 20 facilitators. Few schools have in the past been exposed to this experience, which has now been intensified through the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding between these two institutions.

This initiative comes at a time when Freedom Park is also embarking in an outreach project visiting schools in various districts and provinces making awareness and educating the learners about Freedom Park, a heritage destination.
