CoGHSTA to host a national conference to raise awareness on healthy practices for a healthy society

On the 24 to 25 November 2011, Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, MEC Mr Soviet Lekganyane will be hosting a traditional initiation school conference at Bolivia lodge in Polokwane at 09h30.

The conference will educate the traditional leadership, initiation schools and practitioners, about the importance of adopting healthy initiation practices that upholds human rights. The occasion has drawn a high-powered delegation from the National House of traditional Leadership, other relevant departments in other provinces, traditionalists including traditional doctors and nurses who are custodians of this process.

As it is the practice, traditional leadership will be projected to oversee the initiation process by ensuring that there is a ceiling compliance with legislation in all traditional schools so that no disrepute can be brought by any doctor during this traditional practice to avoid the closing down of the initiation schools in the past years due to a failure to compliance. Most of what will be discussed during the conference include among others:

  • unforeseen deaths and injuries that could have been avoided
  • excessive fees which are never negotiated and agreed upon with role-players
  • illegal initiation schools
  • non compliance, and
  • failure to complete the initiation process which lead to a delay in the academic process of young boys and girls.
