The Mitchells Plain Skills Development Centre will receive R2,5 million in funding from the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (CHIETA) when the organisation hands over a cheque to Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Marius Fransman in Mitchells Plain on Saturday.
The Skills Development Centre came about as a result of the Mitchells Plain Education Summit launched in April 2010 by Minister Trevor Manuel and Deputy Minister Marius Fransman. The centre now provides skills based training to 150 learners and individuals wanting to improve their skills and learn new trades.
A very excited Fransman who recently moved from Chairman of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Higher Education to Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation said that he was pleased to be part of the process of re-birth in Mitchells Plain. “We started out from humble beginnings in Mitchells Plain with this process of skills upliftment for the youth. Our aim is to ensure that the young people of Mitchells Plain have access to a structured skills development programme. We have seen a great commitment from the sector education and training authorities (SETAs) in coming on board to help us tackle the socio-economic issues in Mitchells Plain,” said Deputy Minister Fransman.
The R2,5 million CHIETA funding will go towards New Venture Creation Programmes, IT training and Infra-structure development. “The CHIETA has decided to support the Mitchells Plain Skills Development Centre because we are committed to making education, training and development our number one priority for social upliftment of the youth in Mitchells Plain,” added Fazel Ernest, CHIETA spokesperson.
