Candidates contesting the municipal by-elections scheduled for 13 June 2012

Municipal ward by-elections will take place in four provinces namely Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo on Wednesday, 13 June 2012.

A total of five (5) vacant wards will be contested by 15 candidates of whom one (1) is an independent candidate and the rest represent eight (8) political parties.

Two (2) by-elections are scheduled for the Eastern Cape:

  • Ward 17 in Emalahleni (Lady Frere) Municipality – EC136 is uncontested. Zephaniah Zamekile Papiso of the African National Congress is the only candidate. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
  • Ward 8 in Matatiele [Matatiele] Municipality – EC 441 will be contested by Nomfundo Myrah Mongoato, an independent candidate; Morena Emmanuel Faro of the African Independent Congress; Tsiliso Patrick Motjope of the African National Congress; and Sandile Eric Nyamakazi of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

One by-election will take place in the Free State: 

  • Ward 33 in Matjhabeng (Welkom) Municipality – FS184 will be contested by Anthony Khelemethe Nakedi of the African National Congress; Roquet Beneke of the Democratic Alliance, Thato Esther Phoofolo of the United Residents Front; and Cornel Fourie of the Vryheidsfront Plus. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor from the party.

One (1) by-election will take place in KwaZulu-Natal:

  • Ward 1 in Nqutu (Nqutu) Municipality – KZN242 will be contested by Bongani Mncube of the African National Congress, Zanele Sithole of the Inkatha Freedom Party, and Mtshengiseni Themba Ndlovu of the National Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

One (1) by-election will take place in Limpopo:

  • Ward 12 in Blouberg [Bochum/My Darling] Municipality – LIM351 will be contested by Mashilo Moses Kgwatalala of the African National Congress; Ankie Lucia Sebidiwa of the Congress of the People; and Phuti Phineas Nkoana of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 20 676 voters are registered in the five wards and 15 voting districts where by-elections are scheduled to take place.
