The Bethal Trial Story, “where do we begin” is a compelling read which details some undocumented scenes during the 1976 riots. The book will be launched on Thursday, 24 July 2009 and then made available in libraries across Gauteng as part of the provincial government's political heritage collection. The book tells the story of a trial where the defendants were tried for activities related to the riots sparked in the then West Rand by the students of Mosupatsela High School on 17 June 1976.
Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane and MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Nelisiwe Mbhata-Mthimkulu will both attend the launch of the book to demonstrate their support for preserving the country's rich political history and making it accessible to the residents of the province.
The political heritage collection was launched in 2002 and includes books, videos and tapes written and produced by political leaders and other writers during the apartheid regime. Most of these were banned and communities could not have access to them. This project was intended to transform book collections in libraries and address inequalities of the past.
