Arts and culture promotes a culture of reading

On 18 July 2010, the world will unite to celebrate our living legend, Tata Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. On this day, the national celebrations will take place at Mvezo, Eastern Cape Province. The President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr Jacob Zuma will deliver a key-note address.

The 67 minutes symbolises 67 years of uninterrupted and selfless service to the people of South Africa and the world. On this historic day, people throughout the world are encouraged to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to doing something good for humanity.

Under the theme: “Make every day a Nelson Mandela Day”, the Department of Arts and Culture, is embarking on a number of activities from 14 -18 July 2010.

In line with our vision of promoting a culture of reading, the Department will distribute books to libraries and schools in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape provinces. We will also use the opportunity to highlight career opportunities in the arts, culture, and heritage sector.

In an effort to intensify our Fly the Flag Campaign, we will distribute flags to a number of schools and public institutions.

In the spirit of the Nelson Mandela Day Campaign, the “In Conversation with Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and Albert Mvumbi Luthuli" exhibition will be launched at Nelson Mandela Museum in the Eastern Cape.
