Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile signs a Cultural Agreement with his Palestine counterpart

The Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Paul Mashatile will host the Palestinian Minister of Culture, Ms Siham Mohammad Abdel Salam Barghouty for the signing of a Cultural Agreement between the two countries scheduled for 1 February 2012. 

The purpose of the Cultural Agreement is to formalise cultural relations between the two countries, promote mutual understanding of diverse cultures, create opportunities to access cultural markets in each country and facilitate development and training in areas of common interests.

Specific areas of cooperation include the study of languages, literature, culture and history; the exchange of study and lecture visits by experts; the exchange of co-operation in various cultural fields of reciprocal interest, including exhibition of art and artefacts, music, dance and drama; cooperation between schools of art, associations of artists and writers, museums, archives and other cultural institutions; the exchange of knowledge among organisations for conservation of cultural heritage; co-operation in the fields of libraries, including the exchange of books and exchange of expertise.

It is envisaged that Minister Mashatile will lead a South African delegation on a reciprocal visit later this year when Palestine hosts the South African Cultural Week. Members of the media are invited to the signing.
