Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane to visit Moroka High School

The Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane, Free State Education MEC Tate Makgoe and senior officials of the Free State Department of Education will visit Moroka High School at 9:30 am on Saturday, 12 February 2011 in support of the school being chosen to benefit from the Historic School Restoration Project (HSRP).

Ndungane who is the President of HSRP said the purpose of the project is to acknowledge the role historic schools played in community development and producing influential leaders despite with numerous challenges during the struggle against Apartheid.

Moroka High School was regarded as an education hub where most banned politicians from South Africa found refuge and received quality education.

It has produced leaders such as Dr Khotso Mokhele recently appointed as Chancellor of the University of Free State, the Executive Mayor of Mangaung Municipality Playfair Morule and Chose Choeu the Managing Director of Eskom.

This would be Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane second visit to the school after the launch of the Historic Schools Restoration Project in 2007.

A historic school is defined is defined as a presently under- resourced South African secondary school which has formally played a significant role in the formation of our present day nation and be 60 years and older.

Moroka High School was chosen on the basis of the following criteria:

  • The school should have previously achieved prominence in the community it served through quality of graduates it produced.
  • The school should be African in cultural character
  • The school should have the potential to be a centre for sustainable community development
  • The school should clearly demonstrate ownership of the restoration process by the surrounding community.
