Science and Technology Deputy Minister, Mr Derek Hanekom will deliver an opening address at the annual Advanced Manufacturing Technology Strategy (Amts) Symposium to be held at the Midrand Conference Centre from 14 to 15 September 2009.
The purpose of the symposium is to:
* Create an information sharing opportunity for the AMTS stakeholders
* Highlight the impact of the AMTS
* Report on the progress of technical and human capital development projects
* Present project progress and successes to the AMTS network and encourage cooperation and learning.
The AMTS develops critical competencies aimed at strengthening the technological base and competitiveness of the South African manufacturing sector. It has delivered some 25 world class projects, valued at more than R140 million.
These include the following:
* A project to develop panels for aircraft interiors using natural fibres
* Developing capabilities to produce high quality casting from titanium alloys
* Establishment of advanced manufacturing technology laboratories.
In enabling the objectives of the strategy, the AMTS implementation unit invests in the development of technology platforms that increases current and creates new, competitive advantages, while strengthening relevant scarce skills and balancing technical knowledge acquired through research projects.
Building and continuing smart partnerships between project participants and the broader industry network is of the utmost importance in ensuring the development and uptake of South African technologies in the global arena.
