Angels in uniform honour the Mandela month at Umtata in the Eastern Cape

In support of Mandela month, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will resume with a community service project in a form of a cleaning up event at Umtata in the Eastern Cape.

The senior SANDF delegation will accompany Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Lindiwe Sisulu during the cleaning up campaign that will be conducted in conjunction with the Umtata Town Council and the Business Community of the town. This is done to honour the legacy of the former Commander-in-Chief of the SANDF, President Nelson Mandela.

This is but one of the many contributions by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) during the month of July in celebration of Mandela Day which aims to serve as a global call to action for people to “recognise their individual power to make an imprint and help change the world around them for the better”.

The programme of activities for Umtata is scheduled as follows:

  • 19 July: Cleaning of a town centre as well as exhibition at Nqanduli by SA Navy and 14 South African Infantry Battalion (14 SAI).
  • 20 July 2011: Donation of blankets, heaters, curtains to Efata School. SA Navy and 14 SAI will exhibit at Nyandeni.
  • 30 July: The Freedom of the City Parade, in Umtata, will conclude the activities of the Mandela Month wherein the SA Air Force will showcase their aerial display.

Any development will be communicated as and when it happens.
