African Peer Review Mechanism provincial consultation

Members of the media are invited to an African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Provincial Consultative Conference. The APRM emerged through the adoption of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) declaration on democracy, political and corporate governance at the inaugural summit of the African Union in Durban in July 2002.This is a mutually agreed instrument voluntarily acceded to by the member states of the African Union as a self-monitoring mechanism.

South Africa was reviewed in July 2007 and the country review report was released in September of that year. The country has prepared its first report on the implementation of the programme of action covering the period November 2007 to December 2008 and outlines actions taken to address the challenges identified and articulated in the APRM programme of action. The country is expected to submit its second progress report and as a result consultative conferences are being held in all nine provinces to collate this report.

The Premier, Ms H Jenkins will do the keynote address and set the tone for the discussions that need to unfold. Senior officials from the Department of Public Service and Administration responsible for the APRM will also be in attendance.
