Acting Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Nathi Mthethwa to receive Dipaleseng Local Municipality progress report

Acting Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Nathi Mthethwa will on Friday, 13 May 2011 visit Dipaleseng Local Municipality (DLM). Minister Mthethwa accompanied by representatives from various sector departments and stakeholders will visit Balfour to receive a progress report on the service delivery challenges that were raised in the area.

The Dipaleseng Municipality experienced a number of marches leading to a series of violent protests between July 2009 and February 2010. The following, amongst others were cited as reasons for the protests: 

  • lack of service delivery
  • unemployment
  • skills development
  • incorporation of Dipaleseng into Gauteng

In an attempt to address these grievances, Minister Sicelo Shiceka was appointed by President Jacob Zuma to coordinate a Task Team comprising of officials from national and provincial CoGTA, Public Protector’s Office and the Municipal Manager of Dipaleseng (Balfour), to assist the Municipality in addressing grievances indicated above.

The Task Team was extended to include specific Provincial and National government departments, the Business Sector, State Own Enterprises (SoEs) e.g. Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and Community Based Organisations.

Provincial and national departments, district municipality, stakeholders of Dipaleseng have been working together to respond the service delivery challenges. Various interventions have been undertaken to address the concerns of the community and achievements have been registered. It is during this visit that Minister Mthethwa and his counterparts will assess the progress and achievement of the Dipaleseng Local Municipality.
