Acclaimed performance of the Messiah in commemoration of Africa Day

The Minister of Arts and Culture, Ms Lulu Xingwana invites members of the media to a performance of the South African Messiah. The concert is part of the Africa Day celebrations programme and a partnership between the Department of Arts and Culture and the African Cultural Organisation of South Africa (ACOSA), an organisation that has been in existence since 1947. ACOSA offers orchestral and choral music training to youth from underprivileged communities.

The South African Messiah is an interpretation of the classic Handel’s ‘Messiah’, with sections translated into the 11 South African official languages by renowned musician Michael Masote. The Messiah is a two hour oratorio celebrating life and resurrection, central to a wide variety of the world’s religions. The South African Messiah was conceived to unify all South Africans in song while drawing from all our cultural backgrounds and musical practices.
