68th plenary meeting of the International Cotton Advisory Committee

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Cotton South Africa will be hosting the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) 68th plenary meeting in Cape Town from 7 to 11 September 2009.

This event is hosted annually by member countries and South Africa has been honoured to host this prestigious event this year.

The ICAC is an international, intergovernmental organisation established in 1939 and made up of 44 member countries that are cotton producers, consumers and traders. The ICAC monitors developments, provides support and guidance to cotton producing countries on world cotton production, trade, consumption, stocks and prices and advises of measures suitable and applicable for maintaining and developing a sustainable world cotton industry.

The meeting will include a major component on the International Year of Natural Fibres (IYNF) as it was declared by the General Assembly of the United Nations that 2009 is the International Year of Natural Fibres.

The theme of the meeting will be “the role of cotton in economic development and ensuring food security during a period of global economic crisis”.

Observers are welcome but are required to pay a registration fee of US$450 for registration by fax or in person. The fee is reduced to US$425 for on-line registration in advance. The registration fee includes the cost of the CD containing plenary documents. People are encouraged to bring along their identifications from organisations they come from or represent, this is for security purposes.
