21st February is International Tourist Guide Day

Theme: Culture as a unifying guide

Media is invited to experience Pretoria as a tourist destination under the guidance of a deaf tourist guide on 21 February 2011, in celebration of the International Tourist Guide Day. The celebration of this day is in recognition and acknowledgement of the tourist guiding profession and the achievements accomplished through the good ambassadorial work rendered by tourist guides on behalf of their respective countries.

The event will be celebrated under theme, “Culture as a unifying guide”.

The two hour tour will begin at the Voortrekker Monument and will be graced by senior officials from the national Department of Tourism, the Gauteng Tourism Authority and the Federation of Tourist Guides in South Africa as well as members of the public from disadvantaged communities.

Transport will be available for media travelling from Johannesburg at the Gauteng Tourism Authority offices, No. 1 Central Place, Corner Henry Nxumalo and Jeppe Streets, Newtown, at 08h00am.

Venue: Departure from the Voortrekker Monument, Eeufees Road in Pretoria

A formal programme will resume at 11h30 to 13h00 where presentations will be made on challenges experienced by tourist guides and programmes on how to address such challenges.
