2010/11 Festive Season Road Safety Plan

As part of the Make Roads Safe Campaign, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele will officially announce the road safety plan for the 2010/11 festive season on Thursday.

Details of the event are as follows:

Date: Thursday, 18 November 2010
Venue: Potchefstroom, North West province
Time: 09h30 for 10h00

The Minister will commence with a visit to a taxi rank and road block. Thereafter, he will proceed to the Ikageng Stadium in Potchefstroom where the formal event is expected to commence at about 11h30.

Minister Ndebele will be joined by various members of the Transport Family, including North West MEC for Public Safety Mr Howard Yawa, acting CEO of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) Mr Collins Letsoalo, other senior transport officials as well as representatives from various civil society organisations.

On 10 September 2010, the Minister unveiled the new National Rolling Enforcement Plan (NREP). From 1 to 31 October 2010, 1 053 million vehicles and drivers were stopped and checked and thousands of fines issued for various traffic offences. This marked the start of a new major law enforcement drive that will be intensified as we head towards the December holidays.

As government, we remain committed to reducing road carnage in South Africa by half in accordance with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). However, road safety is not what you do to the community; it is what we do with the community.

All media are invited to attend.

Journalists attending must confirm their attendance by no later than 10h00 on Wednesday, 17 November 2010 with:
