2010 Heritage Day Celebration

The 2010 Provincial Heritage Day celebration will be held as follows:

Date: 24 September 2010
Time: 10:00
Venue: Ficksburg Showgrounds (Ficksburg)

The celebration will take place under the theme: “Celebrating South Africa’s Living Human Treasures – The Custodians of our Intangible Cultural Heritage”.

However, because of the fact that this year our country successfully hosted the most important global soccer tournament, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the Province will incorporate the celebration of that successful hosting into the Heritage Day celebration.

This successful hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup has undoubtedly become an integral part of our heritage. The sub-theme will therefore be: Celebrating 2010 FIFA World Successes – Our Heritage.

Intangible Cultural Heritage is manifested through:

  • Oral traditions and expressions including language as a vehicle of the Intangible Cultural Heritage;
  • Performing arts;
  • Social practices, rituals and festive events;
  • Knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe;
  • Traditional craftsmanship.

The celebration in Ficksburg will therefore incorporate the following activities that express the above elements:

  • There will be rendition of poems and praise-songs which expresses our oral tradition;
  • Traditional dances and music will be performed as part of the performing arts;
  • Exhibition of indigenous literature classics (books) will also be staged to communicate the knowledge systems and practices.
  • Traditional healers and leaders will be represented at this celebration to emphasise social practices and rituals.

About 6 000 people from across the Free State and the neighbouring country of Lesotho are expected to attend this celebration.

Your media house is cordially invited.
