2009 National World Food Day celebrations

The Limpopo Department of Agriculture in conjunction with the National Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries will host the 2009 National World Food Day on 16 October 2009, in Muyexe village, Giyani municipality.

World Food Day is an initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations. World Food Day was proclaimed in 1979 and has been celebrated by member states on 16 October each year. The aim of the day is to heighten public awareness of the world war of fighting global food shortages, hunger, malnutrition and poverty.

The Muyexe village has been chosen as a host village in order to highlight the Comprehensive Rural Development programme strategy which is being piloted by the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development as a way of stimulating rural development through sustainable projects. Activities of the day (16 October 2009) will kick-off by planting of vegetables in household in Muyexe village at 09h00 and the main event will start at 10h00 at Muyexe sports ground.

Dignitaries to attend the event include, amongst others, the Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Premier of Limpopo, the Limpopo MEC for Agriculture and her counterparts from other provinces, the host local and district mayors, representatives of the United Nation’s FAO and farmers’ representatives.
