16 houses to mark 16 Days of Activism for Violence
against Women and Children

The MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA) Mr Soviet Lekganyane invites all media houses as he will be handing over 16 houses to 16 needy families to mark the 16 Days of Activism for Violence against Women and Children Campaign scheduled from 25 November to 10 December every year. The campaign is an international initiative originating from and sponsored by the Center for Women's Global Leadership in 1991, aimed at curbing the gender-based violence within societies.

In support of the provincial lined-up events for this occasion, CoGHSTA will be celebrating it in style with the Nare-Letsoalo community at 10h00, (previously known as Ntjontjodi), Ga-Maja on 30 November 2011. The handover of these homes, will also incorporate the internal initiative of giving back to the communities we serve by Team CoGHSTA, whereby clothes, groceries and toys are donated through the “Donate- a Gift” campaign, which has become CoGHSTA’s Corporate Social Investment programme.

This 16-day period also highlights other significant dates including 29 November, International Women Human Rights Defenders Day, 1 December, World AIDS Day, and 6 December, which marks the Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre.

Over the years, the campaign has been used as an organising strategy by individuals and groups around the world to call for the elimination of all forms of violence against women and children.
