M Tshabalala-Msimang to deliver address at graduation of Cuban trained

Graduation ceremony of 41 Cuban-trained doctors, Groenkloof
Campus, University of Pretoria Friday (tomorrow) 11am to 14h00

A graduation ceremony of the Cuban-trained doctors, as part of a signed
agreement between South Africa and Cuba, will be held at Groenkloof Campus in
the University of Pretoria on Friday (tomorrow) from 11am to 14h00. The
Minister of Health Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang will deliver the keynote
address.

The Deputy of Minister of Public Health of Cuba Dr Roberto Gonzalez Mart�n,
who has travelled all the way from Cuba to be part of this ceremony, will be
accompanied by a delegation from the Cuban Foreign Affairs and Economic and
Trade Ministries.

Of the 470 students enrolled in the training programme, 171 are back in the
country and 91 including the 41 who will be graduating tomorrow (Friday) have
qualified as medical doctors.

These doctors are beneficiaries of the Department of Health's programme
which, recruits students with potential from the historically disadvantaged
communities to study medicine in Cuba, as part of government's effort to
address the brain drain.

As part of their bursary agreement with the Department, the doctors will
work in under-served areas and remain in the public service for a minimum of
five years.
